A while ago I started to become interested in calligraphy, I found a cheap kit and started to practice. My letters looked like a five year old did them, but I practiced more and more and I became happier with how they looked. I started to look at calligraphy as a form of painting and not as writing and it helped me a lot. I also started to read blogs about calligraphy, started to follow calligraphers on instagram and at some point I was practicing every day and I realized that I was practicing cause I liked it, and not because I was trying to be perfect at it- like I usually did with things. Soon I began to digitize my work and I was so obsessed with it to be perfect that I would spend hours in Illustrator trying to make all the lines smooth and without a flaw and that’s when it really hit me. As much as I would try to make my letters look perfect, they would never be because nothing is perfect.
I was always waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect time to do something. And the more I waited, or the more I tried to make it perfect I ended giving up on it because it would never be perfect and I would never be satisfied with it. I always sought that everything I did is perfect – the coffee that I made in the morning, the muffins that I baked, when I cleaned the house, what I wrote for this blog(that’s why it got dusty in here), how I edited my photos, and although until a certain point that is good, cause you keep pushing yourself to evolve, I moved past that point a long time ago and it started to become more of an obsession. I couldn’t enjoy the things that I did because they were not perfect, I would refuse to take photos of certain things because I didn’t think they were “perfect” and I let that stay in the way of capturing certain moments in my life.
I am over that, not completely but I accepted that things will never be perfect. I will never have perfect skin or perfect face, my coffee will always need more sugar, my photos will show beautiful moments and people with blurry faces, my letters will always have flaws and the important thing is that I am more than okay with that!
